What reversed audio is actually for
Reversal sounds like a gimmick until you hear how often it is used. Producers reverse a cymbal or a vocal tail to make a swell — that rising whoosh that pulls you into a chorus or a scene change. Film and game sound designers reverse breaths, doors and piano notes to make ordinary sounds feel uncanny. Podcasters drop a second of reversed speech in as a stinger. And then there is the playground use: flip a message, send it to a friend, and let them discover that reversing it again brings your voice back word for word. Reversal loses nothing — it only turns the tape around.
Reverse a stretch, not just the whole file
You do not have to flip the entire track. Drag across the waveform to select just the part you want — the last second before a drop, one spoken phrase, a single drum hit — and apply the reversal to that stretch alone. The rest of the file plays forward as normal, a marker on the waveform shows where you have worked, and the undo button steps back one edit at a time if you change your mind. You can stack several reversed sections in one file this way, listening between each edit before you export anything.
A few format facts worth knowing
Anything your browser can play can come in: MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, or a video whose soundtrack you want flipped. The only step that touches quality is the MP3 encoding at the end, so pick 320 kbps if the source is music you care about. The free tier covers files up to 1.5 minutes and 20 MB, which is plenty for effects and messages — a day pass or unlock lifts the cap for longer material. Two tips before you start: if the recording is too quiet or has one loud spike, balance it first in /audio-volume-editor, and if your source is a video you also want as an ordinary forward MP3, pull that copy out with /mp4-to-mp3 first.
How reversing works
The decoded audio samples are simply read back to front before re-encoding — no pitch or speed change, just the whole waveform flipped in time.
Does this work on video files too?
