A semitone is the smallest step on a piano — the distance from one key to its immediate neighbour, black keys included. Twelve of them make an octave, which is the gap between a typical male and female speaking range. That gives you a practical ruler: 3 semitones is a nudge, still recognisably the same person but warmer or brighter; 7 semitones is clearly a different voice; 12 semitones is the full cartoon — a rumbling giant downwards or a helium sprite upwards. Why keeping the speed matters
The old-fashioned way to change pitch was to play the tape faster or slower, which drags the timing along with it. Keeping the two separate is what makes this tool useful for real work: a 60-second narration stays exactly 60 seconds after shifting, so it still lines up with the video it was recorded for. A song keeps its tempo, so you can practise along at the original beat in a friendlier key. And speech keeps its natural rhythm and pauses, so it stays easy to follow instead of turning into a sprint or a crawl.

What to expect from the quality
Small shifts of a few semitones come out close to transparent. Push towards the full 12 and you will hear the processing — a slight watery or metallic sheen, most audible on long held notes and sung vowels. That is inherent to how pitch-shifting works, not a fault of your recording; every serious audio tool shows the same fingerprint at the extremes. Clean, close-miked recordings survive shifting far better than echoey or noisy ones, so it pays to start from the best source you have — if the levels are uneven, fix them in /audio-volume-editor before shifting rather than after.
