Semitones, for people who do not read music

A semitone is the smallest step on a piano — the distance from one key to its immediate neighbour, black keys included. Twelve of them make an octave, which is the gap between a typical male and female speaking range. That gives you a practical ruler: 3 semitones is a nudge, still recognisably the same person but warmer or brighter; 7 semitones is clearly a different voice; 12 semitones is the full cartoon — a rumbling giant downwards or a helium sprite upwards. The presets in the dropdown map onto exactly these three landmarks in both directions, so you can pick by ear without ever thinking about music theory.

Why keeping the speed matters

The old-fashioned way to change pitch was to play the tape faster or slower, which drags the timing along with it. Keeping the two separate is what makes this tool useful for real work: a 60-second narration stays exactly 60 seconds after shifting, so it still lines up with the video it was recorded for. A song keeps its tempo, so you can practise along at the original beat in a friendlier key. And speech keeps its natural rhythm and pauses, so it stays easy to follow instead of turning into a sprint or a crawl.

This tool or the voice changer?

The site has two voice tools and they answer different questions. /voice-changer is the fun one: fifteen ready-made characters — robot, ghost, megaphone and friends — each a whole recipe of stacked effects. This page is the precise one: a single clean dial, measured in semitones, with nothing else added to the sound. Reach for this tool when you want a voice a touch deeper for a narration, a podcast guest lifted slightly, or a melody moved to another key. Reach for the voice changer when the goal is disguise or comedy and you would rather pick a character than a number.

What to expect from the quality

Small shifts of a few semitones come out close to transparent. Push towards the full 12 and you will hear the processing — a slight watery or metallic sheen, most audible on long held notes and sung vowels. That is inherent to how pitch-shifting works, not a fault of your recording; every serious audio tool shows the same fingerprint at the extremes. Clean, close-miked recordings survive shifting far better than echoey or noisy ones, so it pays to start from the best source you have — if the levels are uneven, fix them in /audio-volume-editor before shifting rather than after. The free tier handles files up to 1.5 minutes and 20 MB; a day pass or unlock removes that limit.

Why this is different from just changing speed

Playing audio faster or slower changes pitch and speed together — that's the site's separate speed-changer tool. This one uses a proper pitch-shifting algorithm that resamples and time-stretches at the same time, so the pitch moves up or down while the recording's length and pacing stay exactly the same.

Does this work on video files too?

Yes — drop a video and its audio track is extracted, pitch-shifted, and returned as an MP3. It doesn't touch the video itself.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No — decoding, pitch-shifting and MP3 encoding all happen entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
