DWG, DXF, and why the file version decides everything

DWG is the native drawing format of AutoCAD and it is closed: the specification is not published, and every program that reads it has had to work out the format from the outside. DXF was created by the same company as the open interchange format — a documented, plain-text description of the same geometry. That is the whole reason this conversion exists. A DXF opens in virtually every CAD, CAM, laser and plasma package on the market, while a DWG opens properly in a much smaller circle. If you need to hand a drawing to a supplier, a cutter or a colleague on different software, DXF is the format that will not need a phone call afterwards.

Version by version: what we found by testing it

The strength of this converter depends almost entirely on how new the file is, and the honest picture is this. Drawings saved as AutoCAD 2013 or older convert very reliably — real production 2D drawings came through with no visible difference at all. The 2018 format is hit-or-miss, particularly with 3D solids and complex objects, so check the result carefully before you rely on it. Anything newer than 2018 is not recommended. The fix costs nothing: in AutoCAD or any compatible package, use Save As and pick an older DWG version — 2013 or 2010 — then convert that. If the file came from someone else, asking them to save down is a thirty-second favour that solves the problem at the source.

What survives the conversion, and what does not

Geometry is the reliable part: lines, arcs, circles, polylines and their coordinates come through intact, which is what matters if the drawing is going to a cutter. Layers and block structure generally survive too. What can be lost is presentation: some formatting metadata, exotic annotation styles, and proprietary object types that only exist inside AutoCAD have no equivalent in a plain DXF and are skipped. Three-dimensional solids are the least reliable of all, and they are exactly where the newer file versions fall apart. If your drawing is 2D production geometry, you are in the safe zone; if it is a 3D model, treat the result as a draft until you have checked it.

Which DXF you get, and why we picked that one

The output is a standard ASCII DXF in the R2000-era dialect. That is a deliberate choice rather than a limitation: it is the dialect that virtually everything reads, from current CAD packages down to the controller on a ten-year-old plasma table. A newer DXF would carry slightly more information and would be refused by exactly the machines most likely to need it. Because it is plain text, you can also open a DXF in a text editor and look at it — useful when you want to confirm something actually made it into the file.

How to check the result before you cut metal

Never send a converted file straight to a machine. Open the DXF in a viewer or in your CAM package and check four things. Scale and units first: measure a feature you know the size of, because a drawing that arrives at the wrong unit looks perfectly correct until it is cut ten times too large. Then closed contours: cutting software needs a closed profile, and a gap of a hundredth of a millimetre is invisible on screen but stops the toolpath. Then layers, to be sure construction lines have not become cutting lines. Finally, compare the overall shape against the original drawing — five seconds that catch the rare case where something went badly wrong.

Going the other way: DXF back to DWG

Reading a closed format is difficult; writing one reliably is considerably harder. We do offer the reverse direction as a separate tool, but it is deliberately labelled beta, and that label is meant literally: the free tooling for writing DWG is younger and less proven than the tooling for reading it, so treat what comes out as something to check rather than something to trust blindly. Open it in your own CAD package before you send it to anyone. And if your software can save a DXF as DWG itself, prefer that — it goes through code written by the people who own the format. Use ours when you do not have that option.

How well does this work? An honest answer

This converter is built on free, open technology, and its strength depends on the age of your file. Drawings saved as AutoCAD 2013 or older: very reliable — in our testing, real-world 2D production drawings converted with no visible difference. The 2018 format is hit-or-miss, especially with 3D solids and complex objects — check the result carefully. Anything newer than that: not recommended; save the drawing as an older DWG version first (or ask the sender to), then convert.

Also good to know: a conversion can take a few minutes for large drawings, and conversions run one at a time — at busy moments your file briefly waits in line. Leave the page open until your download appears.

Is my drawing uploaded and stored?

The conversion needs our EU-hosted server, but your file only exists there in a temporary folder that is deleted the moment the conversion finishes — succeed or fail. Nothing is stored, logged or inspected.

What DXF version comes out?

A standard ASCII DXF (R2000-era dialect) — deliberately chosen because virtually everything reads it: CAD packages, CAM software, laser and plasma cutters, and viewers.

Can I convert DXF back to DWG here?

Yes — there is a separate DXF to DWG tool, but it is marked beta on purpose. Writing DWG reliably is much harder than reading it and the free tooling for it is less mature, so always open the result in your own CAD package before passing it on. If your software can save a DXF as DWG itself, that route is safer.
