Why scans come out sideways, and how to fix them permanently

The upside-down PDF is rarely anybody's fault. Sheet-fed scanners take the paper however it was stacked, phone scanning apps guess the orientation from the text and sometimes guess wrong, and office copiers cheerfully produce a file where page one stands upright and page two lies on its side. The machine does not care — a PDF stores each page's content and its orientation separately — but a human ends up tilting their head. It is worth knowing that the rotate button in most PDF viewers only rotates the view: close the file and it is sideways again, and it is still sideways for everyone you send it to. This tool changes the orientation stored in the file itself, so the document opens the right way up everywhere, for good.

One quarter turn on top of another

Rotation here is added to whatever a page already carries. That sounds like a technicality, but it is exactly what real scans need: if page 2 came in lying on its left side while the rest are fine, a single 90° turn applied to page 2 alone puts it upright without disturbing anything else. It also means the tool is never a dead end — if the result still is not right, simply run it again for another quarter turn rather than hunting for an undo. Choose 90° right for pages lying on their left side, 90° left for the opposite case, and 180° for the classic batch that went through the document feeder head-first. Only the stored orientation changes, so you can repeat this as often as you like without ever touching the page content.

Fixing only the crooked pages

The pages box accepts the word all — the default — or a precise list: 2 rotates only page 2, 5-7 takes a range, and 2, 5-7, 12 combines both. This is the difference between rescanning a forty-page bundle and a five-second repair: turn the odd pages, leave the rest alone. A practical routine for messy scan batches is to settle orientation here first and tidy the structure afterwards — pull out just the pages you need with the Split PDF tool, or combine several repaired scans into one document with Merge PDF. Orientation is the thing to fix first, because every later step — splitting, merging, printing, OCR — simply inherits whichever direction the pages are facing.

Rotation is added, not replaced

Each page keeps track of its own orientation, and this tool adds your rotation to it. So if page 2 was already sideways and the rest were fine, rotate only page 2 (type 2 in the pages box) instead of the whole document. Run the tool again if you need another quarter turn.

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No — the rotation happens entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your file never leaves your device.

Does rotating reduce quality?

No — rotation only changes each page's orientation flag. The page content is not re-rendered or recompressed.

Why does a password-protected PDF fail?

Encrypted PDFs can't be read without their password. Remove the protection first (with the password you know), then rotate.
