Why jump-cuts read as handmade
Real stopmotion is photographed one frame at a time — move the object, take a picture, move it again. What your eye recognises as the stopmotion look is the absence of in-between motion: things do not glide, they teleport in small steps. This tool fakes that from ordinary footage by keeping only regularly spaced frames and discarding everything between them. The charm lands best on subjects with visible change: building or tidying something, a drawing appearing line by line, LEGO, cooking, a person hopping around a room. Continuous smooth motion — a car driving past — just looks broken, because there is nothing playful about the steps.
Picking your two numbers, with an example
Sample every decides how far apart the kept moments are; hold each frame for decides the rhythm of the result. A concrete example: a 20-second clip sampled every 0.5s gives 40 frames, and at a 0.2s hold those play back in about 8 seconds — a brisk, lively jump-cut that also compresses time. Widen the sampling to 1s or 2s and the effect gets choppier and the result shorter still; lengthen the hold towards 0.5s and it becomes slower and more deliberate, like a slideshow with intent. Two practical tips: keep the camera steady, because a wobbling background makes every jump look like an accident, and make sure something actually changes between one sample and the next.
Born silent — and what to do about that
The result has no soundtrack, by design: audio sliced into disconnected fragments is unpleasant rather than charming, so none is included. Treat that as an invitation. A music bed makes a stopmotion clip feel finished — add one afterwards with /video-audio-replacer and the whole thing changes character. And these clips are natural GIF material: short, looping, no sound to lose — run the finished result through /video-to-gif once you are happy with it, rather than converting first and editing second. How the jump-cut effect is made
The video is sampled at your chosen interval — say, one frame every half a second — and each sampled frame is held on screen for a short moment before jumping straight to the next one. Everything in between the sampled moments is discarded, which is exactly what creates the classic stuttery stopmotion look.
Why is there no sound in the result?
Stopmotion output is silent by design — the original audio would sound like a chopped-up mess once most of the footage between frames is removed, so it's left out entirely.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
It never leaves your device. The frames are sampled and the new clip is recorded right inside your browser tab; close the page and every trace of it is gone.
