Two engines in a row — what that means for your file
No free tool reads a PDF and writes a DWG in one honest step, so this one chains two proven engines instead. First your browser renders the chosen page into a crisp bitmap and shows you the black-and-white preview. Then a tracer converts the black areas into vector outlines — the same vectorizing that powers our scan-to-DXF tools. Finally the outlines are written into a DWG. Each stage leaves its fingerprint on the result: the render scale sets how much detail the tracer can see, the threshold decides what counts as ink, and the DWG-writing stage — the youngest of the three — is the reason we suggest opening the result in your CAD package before relying on it.
What lands in your CAD program
Expect closed outline contours that faithfully follow the black shapes of the page — which is exactly right for floor plans, logos, stencils and clean line drawings. Also expect the honest side-effects of tracing: thick lines come back as slim loops running along both of their edges, text and dimension figures arrive as traced letterforms rather than editable annotations, and there is no real-world scale until you set one. So the routine on arrival is: scale the drawing from one known measurement, delete the traced text and stray specks you do not need, and check that the contours your machine will follow are closed. Ten minutes of tidying turns a trace into a drawing.
Better routes when you have the choice
Before tracing, it is worth one message: if the PDF was exported from CAD, the person who sent it can usually export a DWG or DXF from the same drawing in less time than it takes to read this — and original geometry beats even a perfect trace. If DWG is not a hard requirement from your workflow, the DXF route is one step shorter and skips the beta DWG-writing stage entirely. What this does — an honest answer
Your browser renders the chosen PDF page to a crisp bitmap, potrace traces its black shapes into vector outlines, and LibreDWG writes them as a DWG. It's ideal for plans, logos and line drawings inside a PDF. Two honest limits: there are no real dimensions (rescale in CAD), and — because the DWG step uses the free LibreDWG project — very complex output is best checked in your CAD app. If DWG isn't a hard requirement, PDF to DXF is the more compatible route.
