How this video converter works
Your browser reads the video with its own built-in decoder and we re-encode it with the browser's own encoder — the file never leaves your device, which is why there is no upload bar and no waiting queue. You choose the container (MP4 or WebM), a resolution to scale down to, and a quality level; the tool plays the video through once and records the result in real time, so a two-minute video takes about two minutes. Lowering the resolution or the quality is also the honest way to shrink a video that is too large to send or upload somewhere.
Why only MP4 and WebM as output?
Those are the two formats browsers can actually write, and between them they cover almost everything: MP4 (H.264) plays everywhere — phones, TVs, WhatsApp, editing software — and WebM is the open web format. Writing other formats (AVI, MKV, MOV) would require us to ship our own video encoders, which for the common codecs means patent licensing we deliberately stay away from — the encoder we use is the one your browser maker already licensed. Which of the two you see in the list depends on your browser: Safari always offers MP4, recent Chrome and Edge do too, Firefox is WebM-only.
Why does converting take as long as the video?
The tool literally plays your video once and records the result — that is what keeps it running on any device without uploading anything. A progress percentage shows how far along it is, and you can leave the tab in the background; the recording keeps going.
My AVI or WMV file will not load — why?
The tool can read anything your browser can play, and browsers generally do not play AVI or WMV. MP4, WebM and most MOV and MKV files work fine. For an old AVI or WMV, play it in a desktop player like VLC and use its export function first — after that, this tool can take over.
Does converting improve the quality?
No — re-encoding always costs a little quality, so convert once rather than repeatedly. Pick High quality if you plan to edit the result further, Medium for sharing, and Low when the smallest possible file matters more than looks. Scaling the resolution down shrinks the file far more than lowering the quality does.
