When you want the pitch to move too
This tool behaves like a tape deck on purpose: turn the speed up and everything gets faster and higher, turn it down and everything gets slower and deeper. That linkage is the whole charm of a family of effects — the chipmunk voice at 2x, the dreamy slowed-down remix aesthetic at 0.75x, the ominous half-speed monster voice at 0.5x. Because you can also apply a speed to just a selected stretch of the waveform, you can play one phrase at half speed inside an otherwise normal recording, which is a lovely comic timing trick.
Podcasts, lectures and language practice
The everyday use is simply getting through recorded speech in less time. At 1.25x most voices still sound natural and you save a quarter of the runtime; at 1.5x the pitch rise becomes noticeable but speech stays perfectly intelligible; 2x is for skimming, not listening. Going the other way, 0.75x is genuinely useful for transcribing an interview or studying a language — every word gets more room, at the cost of the speaker sounding a little deeper and drowsier. The free tier takes files up to 1.5 minutes and 20 MB; longer lectures need a day pass or unlock.
And when you want the pitch to stay put

Between the two there is even a workaround for the combination neither offers on its own: speed a file up 2x here, then shift it down 12 semitones there, and you land on double speed at roughly the original pitch. It will carry some processing artefacts, but for a quick result it works. Why pitch changes along with speed
This tool resamples the audio, the same thing that happens when you play a record faster or slower — speed and pitch move together, so a 2x speed-up also raises the pitch. That's expected behaviour here, not a bug; if you need speed changed independently of pitch, that's a different (and much heavier) kind of processing.
Does this work on video files too?
