Extract a RAR archive and repack it as a ZIP — the format every OS and every app can open natively.
Why RAR keeps landing in your downloads
RAR earned its following in the era of small disks and unreliable downloads: WinRAR compressed noticeably tighter than ZIP, could split an archive across volumes, and could repair light damage from its recovery records. Communities that grew up with it — forums, mod sites, long-lived download portals — still package things as .rar out of habit. The trouble is on the receiving end: Windows, macOS and Linux all open ZIP natively, but a RAR file greets most people with an unknown-format shrug and a prompt to install something. Converting the archive once, here, spares everyone downstream that install — and both the classic RAR format and the newer RAR5 come through fine.
What happens on the way through
The archive is extracted and immediately repacked as a standard ZIP, folder structure intact, every file's contents untouched. The overall size usually changes a little, and often slightly upward — RAR tends to compress tighter than ZIP's compression, so the same files need a bit more room in their new packaging. Nothing was lost; it is the same cargo in a roomier box. Because extraction needs real unrar machinery, this one runs on our EU server rather than in your browser — your file exists there only for the seconds the conversion takes and is deleted immediately after, whether it succeeds or fails, with a 100 MB ceiling per archive.
The archives this cannot help with
Three honest exclusions. Password-protected RARs will not open here — remove the protection in a RAR tool first, then convert the unprotected archive. Multi-volume sets — the files ending in .part1.rar, .part2.rar or .r00 — are one archive spread across several files, and a single upload cannot reassemble them; join them with a RAR tool first. And a damaged archive that would have needed WinRAR's repair records is beyond a converter's reach. For everything else, the result is a ZIP that opens anywhere — and if its final destination is a Linux server that would rather have a tarball, the ZIP to TAR.GZ converter carries it the last mile, right in your browser.
Why only this direction — an honest answer
RAR's compression is proprietary to RARLAB (the makers of WinRAR) — there is no free or open-source way to create a RAR file, by anyone, anywhere. Reading/extracting a RAR is freely licensed, which is what powers this tool, but the reverse direction (ZIP → RAR) genuinely isn't buildable without paying for WinRAR itself — so we don't offer it.
Is my archive uploaded and stored?
The extraction needs our EU-hosted server, but your file only exists there for the moment it takes to convert — deleted immediately after, succeed or fail. Nothing is stored, logged or inspected.
What about password-protected RAR files?
Those aren't supported — remove the password in your RAR tool first, then convert the unprotected archive here.
